The Department of Anesthesiology & Operating Theatre

Overview

Anesthesiologists are physician specialists and essential members of the surgical team. They provides complete preoperative evaluation to assess the patient prior to scheduled operative procedures as well as ensure comfort and safety during surgery and make informed medical judgments regarding critical life functions, such as breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. Anesthesiologists also immediately diagnose and treat medical problems that arise during surgery or recovery.

 

The Department of Anesthesiology and Operating Theatre at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (SYSUCC) offers outstanding anesthetic care for all the patients. The Department of Anesthesiology and the operation room established in April, 1964 and combined into the newborn division which is the Department of Anesthesiology and Operating Theatre in October, 2013. We has a clinical staff of 80 OR nurses, 20 PACU nurses, 14 attending anesthesiologists, 12 residents, and 13 associate Professors/Professors, 2 technicians and 1 administration assistant as well as a clinical and basic research team.

 

Each year, we provide anesthesia services for more than 10,000 cases in 18 operating rooms and 4 additional locations on the other departments. Our Department provides a wide range of clinical anesthesia services in both inpatients and outpatients, including general anesthesia, intravenous anesthesia, outside theatre anesthetic and /or sedation services for interventional radiology, painless gastrointestinal endoscopy, the pain management clinic, and postoperative pain management. In 2012, we were awarded as key specialty of GuangDong Province.

 

All surgical specialties and subspecialities are available. They include general surgery (hepatobiliary, breast, gastrointestinal, colorectal, urology, etc) neurosurgery, interventional radiology, chronic pain, radiotherapy and day stay surgery.

 

Our research focus on Anesthesia, Analgesia and Neuropathic pain. We have 3 research programme are funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation and we have published more than 30 articles in scientific journals, such as Anesthesiology, J Pain, BJA, Ann Surg Oncol , Anesth Analg and CJA, etc.
