Thoracic Surgery

Overview
The department of thoracic surgery is dedicated to the early screening, diagnosis and treatment of thoracic diseases. We strive to provide state-of-art surgical techniques with a focus on lung cancer, esophageal cancer and mediastinal tumors. We also streamline and standardize the clinical care via a multidisciplinary approach to achieve more precise cancer staging and better outcomes. Currently, we are one of the leading specialties in south China with pioneering surgical techniques, high surgical volume, and significant impact in scientific research. According to the latest annual report of the Hospital Management Institute (Fudan University), our department ranks 7th nationwide and 2nd in south China. And our department has been appointed as the State Key Department since 2011. 

Surgeries

To overcome difficulties in the diagnosis and localization of pulmonary nodules, we were the first to bring in electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy in south China. In addition, we strongly believe in enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) and promote minimally invasive surgery. Robotic assisted thoracic surgery and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery have been routinely performed in our department. For peripheral small pulmonary nodules, our surgeons can skillfully perform segmentectomy in any pulmonary segment when indicated.

We are also skilled at tackling locally advanced diseases and have successfully performed multiple difficult operations as follows:
1. carina resection and reconstruction
2. sleeve resection
3. superior vena cava replacement
4. resection of superior sulcus tumor
5. resection of esophageal cancer and replacement of artificial esophagus
6. chest wall reconstruction with artificial rib & biological patch
7. bilateral lymph node dissection via mediastinoscope
8. extrapleural pneumonectomy

Medical education and international exchange

We are one of the largest teaching centers for thoracic surgery in south China. We recruit a dozen PhD and a dozen master’s candidates annually, and we are open to visiting scholars from all over the country. We have also established a minimally invasive surgery training center for all surgical residents. We are committed in continuous medical education and we have successfully organized multiple international exchange activities. Moreover, we emphasize patients’ education and were appointed as the Lung Cancer education center by the China Anti-cancer Association.

             

Scientific research

As both surgeons and scientists, we are constantly seeking new knowledge to further improve our understanding, diagnosis and treatment of thoracic diseases. We have conducted multiple phase III clinical trials on neoadjuvant therapy of both lung cancer and esophageal cancer, and some have been published in high impact journals with a direct improvement of current clinical practice. We have also established the Guangdong Esophageal Cancer Research Institute and Sun Yat-sen University Lung Cancer Research Center to explore the underlying genomic, phenotypic and pathogenesis of esophageal cancer and lung cancer. We have committed great effort in the establishment and maintenance of the esophageal and lung cancer biobanks, which are the cornerstones of our translational research.
