Liver Surgery

The Department of Liver Surgery, a key department of Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, has been focusing on the prevention and treatment of hepatobiliary malignancies since the foundation of the former Tumor Hospital of South China (now called Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center) in 1964. This department has a long history of conducting primary liver cancer research in China. Also, it is among the earliest clinical units performing liver resection to treat liver cancer in China since 1965. Due to an increasing number of hepatobiliary malignancies, the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery was separated from the Abdominal Surgery Department and became an independent clinical department in 1998. Our center further implemented subspecialty settings, with the Department of Liver Surgery established in 2019.

Clinical and Research Work
The Department of Liver Surgery has been dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer for decades. There are more than 1,000 surgical resection cases, over 2,000 interventional cases, and a few hundred ablative cases each year. For liver cancer patients, the complexity of cancer staging-treatment systems and underlining liver diseases requires the input from various experts skilled in different medical specialties. In the Department of Liver Surgery, cancer treatment is available through multidisciplinary teams including surgeons, radiologists, hepatologists, and chemotherapy physicians. They work together to make sure that each patient’s treatment plan can be well managed based on the principle of individualization.

The Department of Liver Surgery has been emphasizing evidence-based medicine and thus launched a series of clinical trials and basic scientific research. Up to the year 2020, members have published studies on Hepatology, in the Journal of Hepatology, Gut, Ann Surg, J Clin Oncol, Nature Materials, JAMA Oncology, Cancer Research, etc.
