August 20, 2024

On August 16, 2024, the seventh Chinese Physician's Day, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (SYSUCC) held a conference to commemorate its 60th anniversary.

SYSUCC invited 60 eyewitnesses—pioneers, builders, witnesses, and laborers—to share their memories of the hospital's history. These individuals have played crucial roles in the hospital’s development, contributing to the continuation and elevation of SYSUCC’s medical culture across generations.

During the event, SYSUCC premiered a hospital promotional video titled "This Thought" and a micro-documentary called "60 Years, 60 People." These films highlight the 60-year journey of SYSUCC's growth through a compilation of precious historical materials, showcasing the relentless dedication of generations of SYSUCC doctors in advancing medical science and protecting public health.

Over the past 60 years, SYSUCC has seen remarkable growth, evolving from a modest three-story building in 1964 to a prominent institution with three campuses in Guangzhou’s Yuexiu, Huangpu, and Tianhe districts. SYSUCC has been ranked fourth in the Natural Index Ranking among global cancer centers for the past three years and has led pioneering efforts in the development and clinical application of innovative biological monoclonal antibody drugs in China.

Patients also shared their gratitude and well-wishes for SYSUCC. "When I was 32 years old and five months pregnant, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. I am truly grateful to SYSUCC," said 87-year-old Aunt Li with heartfelt sincerity. Diagnosed in 1969, Aunt Li underwent a combined radical thyroid cancer surgery and unilateral neck lymph node dissection at SYSUCC. Fifty-five years later, she continues to send her blessings to the hospital.

“Hello, Professor Li Wei: Thirteen years ago, as a patient battling a stomach tumor and teetering on the edge of life, I was incredibly fortunate to have met you. Your medical expertise and sense of humor brought me immense comfort. It’s a bit disappointing to learn that you’ve retired, but I wish you a joyful retirement, good health, and a long life!”

“My daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and despite seeking treatment in many places, we found no success. Fortunately, we met Dr. Wang Juan at SYSUCC. Dr. Wang’s gentle words gave us the courage to face our fears. Thank you so much for your attentive care and treatment. Our little girl has now survived another year and is as lively and cheerful as ever. We are deeply grateful to Dr. Wang for saving our child’s life, allowing us to experience the joy of being parents for many more years!”
