Visit of the B.P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital, Nepal

On Feb 18-21th, 2014, the B.P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital, Nepal, welcomed a delegation from the Sun Yat-Sen University cancer center (SYSUCC) . The delegation was led by Dr. Chao-Nan Qian, Vice President of SYSUCC, and the delegation members included Dr. Wen-Qi Jiang, director of Internal Medicine Department, Dr. Wei-Wei Liu, Dr. Lin Cai, Dr. He Huang and Dr. Hong Yang. Our delegation received warm welcomes from Dr. Laxmi Singh, the President of B.P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital, Dr. Bhakta Shrestha, the Chairman of the Hospital’s Administration Committee, and Dr. Anil Karki, the Chairman of the Management Committee.

Meanwhile, the representatives of BPKMCH shown the delegation around the hospital; our leaders visited the out-patient department, the inpatient wards, the specific clinical departments, the medical technology department, the operation rooms, the hospice wards and the prayer room for patients and their families.

The B.P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital was reconstructed by the Chinese government during 1991- 1998. It became a national referral cancer center with over 100 beds and 30 specialists. The hospital is well equipped with medical facilities Besides, to promote the healthcare development in Nepal, a group of specialists from the Health Department of Henan Province was dispatched to BPKMCH by the Chinese government.

During the visit, the specialists on both sides exchanged ideas about research and surgical techniques. They held a consultation for the head and neck cancer patients and decided of a medical treatment for the patients together. More importantly, the visit was the occasion to explore opportunities for collaboration between the two cancer centers, and both sides reached preliminary agreements in physicians training, specialists dispatching and academic exchanges.

In conclusion, the Sun Yat-Sen University cancer center will continue supporting the medical education in B.P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital. We wish our partnership with BPKMCH would benefit Chinese and Nepalese people in our common fight against cancer.
