Susan Goodin from Rutgers University, New Jersey, a first impressive visit of SYSUCC

Pr Susan Goodin from RUTGER University, cancer institute of New Jersey, honored us by a visit during her visit in Guangzhou on October 17th, 2014. Pr Susan Goodin is Professor of Medicine as well as the executive officer of BIG Cancer Research Consortium; her responsibilities include the management of her clinical trials office which performs numerous trials on prostate cancer. She is also on the initiative of several discoveries in the use of natural components for the treatment of cancer.

Together with her collaborator, Xi Zheng, Director of the Experimental Anticancer Research Laboratory, Susan Goodin was given a tour of the hospital and different departments of her interest.

She was first welcomed by Pr Cao Ye, deputy director of the clinical trials office. Both women discussed the similarities existing between their two services; they were both stunned to see how much the procedures used looked alike; whether for the number of staff affiliated to the clinical trials, the organization, the process or even the office size.

The tour of the clinical trials department began within the research cell and ended at the new wards installed in march 2014 where Pr Goodin was impressed by the organization and professionalism of the head nurse, Zou Ben Yan.

Then, the deputy director of the urology department, Pr Han Hui, warmly welcome both delegates. Together they discussed numerous research opportunities, especially in the field of innovative methods to treat prostate cancer. The exchange was rich and promising, showing to both parties many great future collaboration opportunities.

It is then Pr Wang Shusen who showed his department of medical oncology specialized in breast cancer. Pr Goodin was keen to know more about the differences between breast cancer in China and in the US. She was significantly surprised by the fact that breast cancer touches so many young women in China, comparatively with the US ; together with Pr Wang Shusen, they discussed the possible reasons of such a pattern.

Finally, the tour ended at the Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Department, where Pr Mai Haiqiang and Pr Guo Ling prepared a nice lecture showing their department as well as their work. Pr Goodin and Pr Zheng were quite impressed by the work of the well-known service which has so many high impact-factor papers. The four experts talked about the biomarkers of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma and its relation to EBV virus.

In general, Susan Goodin said being very impressed by the quality of service provided in Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, and she was disappointed not being able to stay longer to deepen the topics covered with the experts she met. However, as she was leaving SYSUCC, she promised to come back, and next time, she said, she would definitely stay longer.
