The 2nd International Head and Neck Cancer Symposium was successfully hosted by the Guangdong Anti-Cancer Association and Sun Yat- Sen University Cancer Center in Guangzhou. The meeting was supported by the “111” Program for Higher Education Institutional Innovation and Talents Recruitment of the Ministry of Education, and Deputy Director of the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China. Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Prof. Zeng Yixin, along with Chairman of the Guangdong Anti-Cancer Association, SYSUCC President Prof. Xu Rui-hua were Honorary Chairmen of the meeting, Vice President of SYSUCC Prof. Ma Jun, Director of the Hong Kong Cancer Research Institute Prof. Anthony TC Chan, Vice President of the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Prof. Wang Lvhua, and President of the Sichuan Cancer Hospital Prof. Lang Jinyi were co-chairs of the meeting.
The conference invited well-known head and neck cancer experts from many countries including the United States, Australia, Singapore and China. Notable attendees were Associate JCO Editor Prof. Danny Rischin from the University of Melbourne, Associate Editor of CCR Prof. Julie Elaine Bauman from the University of Arizona, Director of Radiotherapy at Stanford University Cancer Center Prof. Quynh-Thu Lee, Director of the Head and Neck Cancer Center at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard University Prof. Robert I. Haddad, and member of the NCCN Head and Neck Oncology Group Prof. A. Dimitrios Colevas, all of whom, have made outstanding contributions to the basic and clinical research of head and neck cancers.

Other speakers included Prof. Edwin P Hui, and Professor KC Allen Chan from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof. Joseph Tien Seng Wee, and Prof. Melvin Lee Kiang Chua both from the National Cancer Center in Singapore. Prof. Li Shaoxiong from the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Ma Jun, Prof. Shao Jianyong and Prof. Bei Jinxin from SYSUCC all gave wonderful speeches at the meeting.
The one-and-a-half-day meeting was on basic, clinical and translational studies of head and neck tumors. Specific attention was given the prevention of head and neck cancer, plasma EBV DNA screening for nasopharyngeal carcinoma, comprehensive treatment strategies for nasopharyngeal carcinoma, immunotherapy and targeted therapy in the clinical application of head and neck cancers. Diagnosis and treatment of nasal NK/T-cell lymphoma and new methods for delineating the target area of head and neck tumors using radiotherapy in the era of big data.

Immunization and targeted therapy were undoubtedly hot topics inspiring much academic debate. Prof. Quynh-Thu Le from Stanford University, Prof. A. Dimitrios Colevas, Prof. Danny Rischin from the Peter MacCallum Cancer Center in Melbourne and Prof. Edwin P Hui from the Chinese University of Hong Kong shared their respective research on immunization and targeted therapy.
The meeting attracted lots of attention as it was live broadcasted around China. On day one of the meeting, the number of views exceeded 10,000. The visting experts in attendance praised the organizational success of them meeting and said they were looking forward to the next one.
