Thoracic Surgery

Introduction of the Department of Thoracic Surgery

The Division of Thoracic Surgery of Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center is the earliest thoracic surgery in China. After years of development, The Division consists of dedicated, board certified thoracic surgeons, and has been the leader in thoracic surgical volumes and novel approaches in south China for many years, particularly in the areas of lung and esophageal cancer. We have formulated an aggressive approach to lung cancer, such as Carina resection and reconstruction, superior vena cava replacement, a variety of bronchial angioplasty, partial excision of cardiac atrium, resection of superior sulcus tumor of Pancoast et al. We have extended the indications of surgery to the patient who is older, who has borderline lung function, and who has advanced disease who otherwise would have been denied surgery. We are able to apply the modern techniques of minimally invasive procedures including video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) and Soft Thoracoscope to many disease processes for the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer and other chest diseases. In recent years, we have extensively carried out all endoscopic lobectomy and systematic mediastinal lymph node dissection, esophagectomy and regional lymph node dissection and mediastinal tumor resection. Now, there are 108 beds in our ward and 10 Professors, 10 Associate Professors along with 10 surgical teams in our department.

Our faculty is known nationally and internationally in the field of thoracic surgery, and the excellence in clinical and basic science research. Our research mission focuses on the early diagnosis, better staging, and prediction of recurrent disease in lung and esophageal cancer. We have developed multidisciplinary approaches to the treatment of these diseases which enable us to provide optimal surgical and non-surgical treatment options while streamlining consultations with other colleagues at this Institution. Development of artificial esophagus and esophageal stent, Research of preoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy of esophageal cancer, Three field dissection of esophageal cancer and lung cancer research in the field of minimally invasive therapy have an important influence in China.

Cancer Care

Our faculty provides state-of-the-art surgical techniques and oncologic therapies, with a major focus in basic science research of lung and esophageal cancer and how it applies clinically to the early diagnosis and prediction of cure in these deadly diseases.

The Division of Thoracic Surgery is dedicated to the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of (non-cardiac) diseases of the chest.  We provide service to a broad range of thoracic issues, including:

• Lung cancer
• Benign diseases and tumors of the lung
• Esophageal cancer
• Benign esophageal diseases (including achalasia, benign tumors and strictures)
• Esophageal reconstruction
• Gastroesophageal reflux
• Mediastinal tumors and diseases (including the surgical treatment of myasthenia gravis)
• Mesothelioma
• Pleural diseases (including infections and pleural effusions)
• Chest wall tumors
• Sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis
• Tracheal resection or stent insertion for airway narrowing

Novel Technologies for the management of thoracic oncology:

• Artificial esophgus for the treatment of esophageal malignancy
• Artificial rib & Biological patch for chest wall reconstruction
• Video-assissted thoracoscopic lobectomy for early-stage NSCLC
• “Sandwich” tecnique for chest wall reconstruction
• Hand-assissted thoracoscopic bilateral lung metastasectomy
• Video-assissted thoracoscopic internal mammary lymph node dissection
• Soft thoracoscopy for pleural benign or malignant diseases
• Mediastinoscopy for biopsy and pre-operative NSCLC staging
• Carina resection and reconstruction
• Superior vena cava replacement
• Bronchial angioplasty
• Partial excision of cardiac atrium
• Resection of superior sulcus tumor of Pancoast
• Three field dissection of esophageal cancer
• Stent insertion for airway or esophageal benign/malignant narrowing
