Introduction
Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (SYSUCC) was established in 1964 and was one of the four earliest tumor hospitals in China. It is one of the affiliated hospitals of the prestigious Sun Yat-sen University. Located in the city of Guangzhou, it is the largest integrated cancer center in southern China for cancer care, education, research and prevention. SYSUCC is a level III (highest rank in China) and class A hospital. It was awarded as the “key subject of Guangdong province” in 1999 and as “key subject of China” in 2001. As a renowned tertiary care center, it accepts patients from all over China and the Southeast Asia.
Patient Care
SYSUCC is a modern medical service provider equipped with 1,072 ward beds, 18 operations room and 12 radiotherapy units. It has over 1,600 staff members with 344 physicians (20 chief Medical resident, 40 professors, 98 deputy chief medical residents, 17 associate professors). In 2010, the center performed about 420,000 out-patients consultations, 9,400 surgeries and 40,000 patients were hospitalized. In 2010, a total of 16,614 new patients have been treated.

The long term follow-up results of many cancers have reached the topmost in the country which includes hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, pulmonary carcinoma, esophageal carcinoma, breast carcinoma, cervical carcinoma, ovarian carcinoma, head and neck carcinoma and lymphomas.
Research and new drug development
Conducting research in oncology is one of the major missions of SYSUCC. The State Key Laboratory (SKL) of Oncology in South China was founded in March 2005 by the Ministry of Science and Technology in China. This laboratory is integrated into SYSUCC and its activities cover a broad spectrum in oncology from basic to translational and clinical research.
Since 2001, a tumor tissue bank has been established to provide researchers a dynamic collection of biological samples (blood, fresh tissue, bone marrow, biopsy, body fluid…) for cancer research.
To cross the gap from basic drug research to clinical application, a Clinical Trial Center (CTC) accompanies physicians and scientists into testing new therapies. It includes a National Clinical Study Center for Anticancer Drugs and a National Key Laboratory of Anti-cancer Drug Development. The CTC is SFDA certified and its core services range from clinical research management, Phase I research, medical statistics, academic research consultation, clinical trial regulation and technical guideline training, feasibility assessment and investigator identification, regulatory affairs, finance and contract management, data management, and clinical epidemiology.
Chinese Journal of Cancer (CJC)
SYSUCC houses the editorial office of the Chinese Journal of Cancer (CJC). Entirely published in English, the CJC publishes original research, reviews, extra views, perspectives, supplements, and spotlights in all areas of cancer research.
International Collaborations
Recognized on an international scale, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center is a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for cancer research. Since 2003, SYSUCC became a sister institution of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. A collaborative laboratory has been set up with Karolinska Institutet for research in immunotherapy, molecular virology and oncological epidemiology.
